Saturday 8/27/2011 Running Plans

It’s that time again for many of us to make plans for longer weekend training runs!

So, here is what’s on the schedule for several NRC members in case anyone would like to join in on their “fun”.

Jeff and I will be running the Brentwood Greenways again beginning from Ravenwood High School starting at 6:00 a.m. for a total of 13 miles (9:15 average pace).

James is running 18 starting from Martin’s around 5:00 a.m. (8:00 average pace for a good chunk of the total). … and then he plans on jumping on a bike for a training ride too! Good luck, James!

Tandy and Kathryn will be starting from Martin’s at 6:30 a.m., running a total of 10 at a 9:30 pace. They will run 5 out, return to Martin’s by 7:30 a.m. and then do the final 5.  You could join for the first 5, second 5 or the whole 10!

Good luck to everyone whatever your running goals may be for the weekend.

…don’t forget to head to Mama’s Java around 8:30 a.m. for Melissa’s famous Breakfast Rollup that so many NRC members love to refuel with.  So good!!

And most importantly, Scott and Kelli return from their trip on Saturday!  Welcome back!!!

“If you want to be the best runner you can be, start now. Don’t spend the rest of your life wondering if you can do it.”

Saturday Morning Run Schedules 8/20/2011

Since Scott and Kelli are out of town enjoying some vacation time with the “fam”, I have been tasked with keeping everyone informed on this Saturday’s run schedules.  I have big (running) shoes to fill, but here goes!

There will be a group of us starting from Ravenwood High School beginning at 5:45 a.m. Ray and I will be running a total of 20 miles around a 9:15 average pace. There will, however be other options.  Jeff and his brother will be joining us to do somewhere in the 12 to 15 mile range.  We will start by running to the Brentwood library and back to get the first 10 miles. We expect to be back to our cars for a quick needed pit stop around 7:15 a.m. or so. Anyone interested could join us then for the final 10 miles from there!

Tandy and Kathryn will be starting from Martin’s at 6:30 a.m. for 9 or 10 miles at a 9:30 pace. Feel free to join them!

The regular 7:30 a.m. group can take off from Martin’s as usual and tackle the mileage of your choice.. 1,2,3,4,5,6!  Pick your miles and have fun!

For a few other NRC members who I’m sure will be logging some long run miles this weekend as well… “Good Luck” to John, Steven, Shawn and James! (and Scott and Kelli as they run multiple laps on the cruise ship track! Hope they do not get dizzy….)

Regardless of where everyone is running, remember to head to Mama’s Java around 8:30 a.m. for some much needed refueling.

….Mind over Miles!

Saturday Running and Entertainment Plans!!

This Saturday we will be running and then getting together later in the day to relax with some wine, food, etc.  First things first, however!!  Although we will still meet at 7:30, there are groups who are training for marathons who will be getting together much earlier for longer runs.  Anyone is welcome to join these groups.  They are as follows:

5am – Kelli and Shawn will meet at Martin’s at 5am for a 15 mile run.  They will be running at an 11 minute (give or take) pace.  Feel free to join them if you want to get in a long weekend run.

5:45am – Amy, Scott, and Jeff will take off at 5:45 but will be returning to Martin’s at 7:15.  If our math is correct, this should allow for a 10 mile run at a pace in the neighborhood of 9:15 per mile.  After we get back at Martin’s, we will take a water break, meet with the 7:30 group, and then those who want will take off for another 5 miles to complete a 15 mile training run.  If you would like to join for the first 10 miles, the last 5 miles, or all 15 miles we would love to have your company!!

7:30am – This is our normal meeting time and those who come can run routes that consist of 2 to 5 miles.

Now for the fun part!!!!  Several NRC’ers are going to Arrington Vineyards tomorrow night at 5:00.  Please feel free to join us if you can.  Everyone will bring their own food/drinks, etc.  If you have never been, it is great place to get together with friends and enjoy each other’s company while wearing something other than running gear 🙂   And by the way, kids are welcome to come so bring the entire family!!

August 2011 NRC’ers Of The Month – Steven Fleming and Shawn Berkau

For August, the Nolensville Running Club chose two runners who have been there from the very beginning.  They were there when NRC consisted of only a handful of runners on Wednesday nights.  They have helped us welcome in all of our new runners and we are lucky to be able to spend time with them a couple of times per week.  This month, NRC congratulates Shawn Berkau and Steven Fleming as our Members of the Month!!

SHAWN BERKAU

Shawn is a consistent runner in both the Wednesday night and Saturday morning NRC runs.  However, even if you have spent a lot of time around Shawn, there are probably some things that you do not know about one of our favorite runners!!

Shawn is originally from LA.  No, not Los Angeles or even Lower Antioch but Lower Alabama.  To be more exact, Fairhope, Alabama.  She has a son (Jude) who will be entering the 6th grade and a daughter (Marina) who will be a freshman in college this year.  Although most of us know her husband and refer to him as Steve, you have probably heard Shawn refer to him as “Buns.”   Personally, I will continue to call him Steve and would suggest others do the same 🙂

Shawn is a realtor for French Christian Patterson.  When she is not working, she enjoys decorating, space planning, fishing, gardening, and riding ATV’s with Steve.  And last but not least, she is always up for a good glass of vino!!

Her upcoming running plans are plentiful!!  Shawn plans on running the following races between now and the end of the year:  Lillian Run for the Mullet 5k, the Women’s Half, The Chicago full (her first one by the way), the Ragnar Relay with her NRC friends, and the Las Vegas full or half(yet TBD).

And maybe one or two other things that you may not know about Shawn?  She is enthralled with sharks and she is the oldest of 4 girls.  In fact, growing up her family would house foster children and, at one point, they had 8 kids in their house!!

The next time you see Shawn wish her luck in all of her upcoming races and congratulate her on being the August Female Member of the Month!

STEVEN FLEMING

Like Shawn, Steven was one of NRC’s first members.  If you have ever run with Steven (and I must admit that very few of our members can accomplish this based on the pace that he runs), you will realize very quickly that he is an all-around great guy who has a passion for our crazy sport.

If you have ever logged miles in the Bent Creek subdivision of Nolensville, you have probably passed Steven’s house.  Although he lives in Nolensville, he was born and raised in Franklin, TN and went to BGA.  After completing his undergrad at UT Knoville (majoring in Logistics), he earned his MBA from Belmont in 2001.  He is the Director of Transportation Operations for the Ingram Group in Lavergne.

Steven married Kristy in January, 1999.  Most of us have probably seen Kristy at Mama’s Java on Saturday mornings either before or after one of her favorite activities, Zumba.  Anyway, Steven and Kristy met by chance during a huge snow storm and…well….the rest is history!!

Steven and Kristy have twin 8 year old daughters – Hannah and Amelia.  Steven describes Hannah as a “spunky, fun loving girl full of energy.”  And Amelia was the inspiration behind Steven’s decision to start running 7 years ago.  Amelia was born with Spina Bifida and is profoundly deaf but she has the best, most easy-going personality of the group according to Steven.

One of the most admirable qualities about Steven is that he does his best to make sure that his running addiction does not interfere with his family time.  In fact, if you see shadowy figures running the streets of Bent Creek at 4am it is probably Steven and one of his fellow NRC’ers whom he has bribed into getting out of bed well before sunrise to get in some miles!!   Outside of running, Steven loves spending time with his family, watching football, and getting in some time at the gym for additional strength training.

Steven’s running plans for the year include the Murfreesboro Middle Half and the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon in November.  He has a passion for these two specific races as he has done the Middle Half 5 times and the Chickamauga race (either half or full) 3 times.  His goals for these two races are 1:30 for the half and 3:30 for the full.  Did I mention that Steven is one of NRC’s speediest runners!!!!

Last but not least, a few things that you may not know about Steven.  Although he graduated from UT, he is a HUGE Auburn fan.  In fact, the top sports moment of his life was attending the BCS Championship game last year in Arizona.  Steven is also learning sign language which he claims is very hard.  And maybe the oddest interesting fact about Steven is the fact that keeps one pair of every running shoe model that he has ever owned.  He clarifies that it is not every pair of shoes, just one of each model/year.  Muck to Kristy’s displeasure, he has them stacked in their spare closet.  Kristy was kind enough to send a picture to NRC of Steven’s collection (without him knowing) just so that we can get a glimpse into the mind of one of NRC’s favorite (and speediest) members.  Thanks Steven….and Kristy 🙂

Saturday Morning (August 6th) Running Plans

Hoping to have a great turnout this Saturday for our weekly 7:30am Saturday morning run.  This week I will not be there at the start of our run but there will be routes sitting beside the blue Fleet Feet cooler for those wanting to run routes ranging from 2 to 5 miles.  As always, here are some other options for those wanting a longer run:

5:15am – Kelli and Shawn will be meeting at Martin’s at 5:15 with a plan to run 12 miles.  They will be running an 11 minute pace.

6:30am – Several runners (Scott, Megan, Mike) are meeting at 6:30 at Martin’s and will be running 12 miles.  They are actually going to meet up with Amy Klotz as she will be 6 miles into her 18 mile run!!  We are hoping to have a great run while providing support for Amy as she runs her longest marathon training run to date.  This group will be running a 9:15 pace (and guaranteed no faster!!) and welcomes others who want to come out and join!!

7:30am – As mentioned above, this is our regular starting time and encourage any and all to come out and run a few miles (or more) with other NRC’ers!!

8:30ish – Meet back at Martin’s and then head over to Mama’s Java for breakfast rolls and coffee!!!

Hope to see everyone tomorroe

Saturday Morning (7/30) Running Plans

This Saturday we will meet at our regular time of 7:30.  The group runs will range from 2 to 5 miles at varying paces.  However, we have several other options to choose from.  These are as follows:

5:45am – Amy and Jeff will be leading a group running a total of 16 miles.  This group will start at the front of Ravenwood school and, although I am unsure of the exact route, they will be running at a 9:00 – 9:15ish pace.  Feel free to join them if you want to get in a long run this weekend!!

6:55am – Kelli and a couple of others will be leaving Martin’s Barbecue at 6:55 to begin a 6 mile run.  This group will run the first few miles in Nolensville and then return to Martins to meet up with others who may want to join for the final few miles.  The pace will be around 10:00 – 10:30ish so, once again, please feel free to come out a little early if you want to get in 6 miles.

As always, we will go to Mama’s Java after the run for food, fun, and fellowship. If you have never joined us before, tomorrow will be a great time to start!!

Thanks and see everyone tomorrow!!

Scott

Saturday Morning (7/23) Running Plans

As usual, this Saturday morning offers several options for all runners. First and foremost, our official start time is 7:30 and we invite everyone to come out at this time for a run/walk of anywhere from 2 to 5 miles.  However, several NRC’ers like to get in a few extra miles before the “official” start time and you are welcome to join these groups as well.  Here are the details for these groups:

6:00am – Kelli Alexander and Shawn Berkau will be running 12 miles beginning at Martin’s Barbecue at 6am.  They will be running at a pace of around 11 minutes per mile.  If you want to get a head start and only join them for part of this run, (4-6 miles or so), please feel free to do so.

6:15am – There will be a fairly large group leaving Martin’s at 6:15 for a run of 8 miles.  If timed correctly, this 8 mile run will end at Martin’s at 7:30.  At this time, several of these “overachievers” will then run 4 additional miles.  Anyone who wants to join for the first 8 miles, the last 4 miles, or maybe even the entire 12 miles is more than welcome.  This group will be running at a pace of around 9:15 per miles.

7:30am – This is the “official” starting time of our Saturday morning run.  All of the runners who met earlier in the morning will all gather at Martin’s at this time (7:30) to meet with other runners who can run at their own pace/distance or possibly join this early group for their final miles.

8:30ish – It’s time to reward ourselves by going to Mama’s Java for breakfast and post-run conversation!!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (Scott) at 394-0821.  Thanks and hope to see you tomorrow morning!!

Saturday Morning (7/16) Running Plans

On Saturday you will have many options to choose from for an early morning run.  At 6am, we will have a group meeting at Martin’s for a 13-14 mile run.  However, this group will be making a stop at Martin’s at the 8-9 mile mark to meet up with those who are meeting at 7:30.  If you are interested in running with this group and only want to run the first part of the run then come on out and join us.  This group will be running a 9:15 – 9:30 pace.  Obviously you are also welcome to join us for the last 4-5 miles of our run if you desire a shorter run.

There will also be a group starting at 6:30 that will run a total of 8 miles.  This group will be running a 10:30ish pace.

The 7:30 group will consist of runners who plan on running anywhere from 2 to 5 miles.  This group is made up of runners who run at a variety of paces.

Thanks and hope to see you Saturday morning!!
